As a young mother, I watched my sons, as they played joyously, slept peacefully and entered each new day with excitement and fresh energy!

What are the experiences I want to give them, what will they carry with them into the world ,……..? I wondered

To teach them to enjoy simple, everyday things and to help them know and love God were top of my list.

Trips to beaches and parks, drawing and painting, learning to play easy duets on the piano, calling friends over for a simple game of cricket in the garden with homemade cake and lemonade to follow — these would be ‘must do’s in our home — and yes they were!

Watching trains, gazing at stars and bird spotting — these memories cannot be erased.

Life is as simple as we allow it to be.

Spreading out 100 photos on the floor and making a giant photo collage to hang on the wall, laughing through late night movies, eating on the balcony and reading a story aloud as they sat either side of me were priceless moments!

Trips to the museum, choir concerts, plays, musicals and live sports events taught them to appreciate, applaud and work to achieve their dream.

Calling on grand parents, aunts and uncles helped them value people and treasure them. Praying as a family, singing hymns together and honoring God in words and actions taught them to love and worship God.

Sitting up at night watching cricket matches , treasuring family trips and making scrap book entries each night with markers and colors are simple things we carry with us in our hearts.

Study times at home were organized, quiet and well managed. School and home work, teachers and friends, classrooms and exams were blessings and we were not going to take it lightly!

Books, puzzles, toy cars and trucks, building blocks and comics — we are well passed that stage now.

Today, as I see my adult sons in their twenties value ‘simple joys and daily mercies’ I am grateful and I thank God.
